¹מַ֝שְׂכִּ֗יל לְאֵיתָ֥ן הָֽאֶזְרָחִֽי׃

maskil le'etan ha'ezrachi

Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

²חַֽסְדֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה עוֹלָ֣ם אָשִׁ֑ירָה לְדֹ֥ר וָדֹ֓ר ׀ אוֹדִ֖יעַ אֱמוּנָתְךָ֣ בְּפִֽי׃

chasde ADONAI olam ashira ledor vador odia emunatkha befi

I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever; To all generations will I make known Thy faithfulness with my mouth.

³כִּֽי־אָמַ֗רְתִּי ע֭וֹלָם חֶ֣סֶד יִבָּנֶ֑ה שָׁמַ֓יִם ׀ תָּכִ֖ן אֱמוּנָתְךָ֣ בָהֶֽם׃

ki-amarti olam chesed yibbane shamayim takhin emunatkha vahem

For I have said: 'For ever is mercy built; In the very heavens Thou dost establish Thy faithfulness.

⁴כָּרַ֣תִּֽי בְ֭רִית לִבְחִירִ֑י נִ֝שְׁבַּ֗עְתִּי לְדָוִ֥ד עַבְדִּֽי׃

karatti verit livchiri nishba'ti ledavid avdi

I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn unto David My servant:

⁵עַד־ע֭וֹלָם אָכִ֣ין זַרְעֶ֑ךָ וּבָנִ֨יתִי לְדֹר־וָד֖וֹר כִּסְאֲךָ֣ סֶֽלָה׃

ad-olam akhin zar'ekha uvaniti ledor-vador kis'akha sela

For ever will I establish thy seed, And build up thy throne to all generations.' Selah

⁶וְי֘וֹד֤וּ שָׁמַ֣יִם פִּלְאֲךָ֣ יְהוָ֑ה אַף־אֱ֝מֽוּנָתְךָ֗ בִּקְהַ֥ל קְדֹשִֽׁים׃

veyodu shamayim pil'akha ADONAI af-emunatkha bikhal kedoshim

So shall the heavens praise Thy wonders, O LORD, Thy faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.

⁷כִּ֤י מִ֣י בַ֭שַּׁחַק יַעֲרֹ֣ךְ לַיהוָ֑ה יִדְמֶ֥ה לַ֝יהוָ֗ה בִּבְנֵ֥י אֵלִים׃

ki mi vashachak ya'arokh laADONAI yidme laADONAI bivne elim

For who in the skies can be compared unto the LORD, Who among the sons of might can be likened unto the LORD,

⁸אֵ֣ל נַ֭עֲרָץ בְּסוֹד־קְדֹשִׁ֣ים רַבָּ֑ה וְ֝נוֹרָ֗א עַל־כָּל־סְבִיבָֽיו׃

el na'aratz besod-kedoshim rabba venora al-kal-sevivav

A God dreaded in the great council of the holy ones, And feared of all them that are about Him?

⁹יְהוָ֤ה ׀ אֱלֹ֘הֵ֤י צְבָא֗וֹת מִֽי־כָֽמ֖וֹךָ חֲסִ֥ין ׀ יָ֑הּ וֶ֝אֱמֽוּנָתְךָ֗ סְבִיבוֹתֶֽיךָ׃

ADONAI elohe tzevaot mi-khamokha chasin yah ve'emunatkha sevivotekha

O LORD God of hosts, Who is a mighty one, like unto Thee, O LORD? And Thy faithfulness is round about Thee.

¹⁰אַתָּ֣ה מ֭וֹשֵׁל בְּגֵא֣וּת הַיָּ֑ם בְּשׂ֥וֹא גַ֝לָּ֗יו אַתָּ֥ה תְשַׁבְּחֵֽם׃

atta moshel begeut hayyam beso gallav atta teshabbechem

Thou rulest the proud swelling of the sea; When the waves thereof arise, Thou stillest them.

¹¹אַתָּ֤ה דִכִּ֣אתָ כֶחָלָ֣ל רָ֑הַב בִּזְר֥וֹעַ עֻ֝זְּךָ֗ פִּזַּ֥רְתָּ אוֹיְבֶֽיךָ׃

atta dikkita khechalal rahav bizroa uzzekha pizzarta oyvekha

Thou didst crush Rahab, as one that is slain; Thou didst scattered Thine enemies with the arm of Thy strength.

¹²לְךָ֣ שָׁ֭מַיִם אַף־לְךָ֥ אָ֑רֶץ תֵּבֵ֥ל וּ֝מְלֹאָ֗הּ אַתָּ֥ה יְסַדְתָּֽם׃

lekha shamayim af-lekha aretz tevel umelo'ah atta yesadtam

Thine are the heavens, Thine also the earth; The world and the fulness thereof, Thou hast founded them.

¹³צָפ֣וֹן וְ֭יָמִין אַתָּ֣ה בְרָאתָ֑ם תָּב֥וֹר וְ֝חֶרְמ֗וֹן בְּשִׁמְךָ֥ יְרַנֵּֽנוּ׃

tzafon veyamin atta veratam tavor vechermon beshimkha yerannenu

The north and the south, Thou hast created them; Tabor and Hermon rejoice in Thy name.

¹⁴לְךָ֣ זְ֭רוֹעַ עִם־גְּבוּרָ֑ה תָּעֹ֥ז יָ֝דְךָ֗ תָּר֥וּם יְמִינֶֽךָ׃

lekha zeroa im-gevura ta'oz yadkha tarum yeminekha

Thine is an arm with might; Strong is Thy hand, and exalted is Thy right hand.

¹⁵צֶ֣דֶק וּ֭מִשְׁפָּט מְכ֣וֹן כִּסְאֶ֑ךָ חֶ֥סֶד וֶ֝אֱמֶ֗ת יְֽקַדְּמ֥וּ פָנֶֽיךָ׃

tzedek umishpat mekhon kis'ekha chesed ve'emet yekaddemu fanekha

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Thy throne; Mercy and truth go before Thee.

¹⁶אַשְׁרֵ֣י הָ֭עָם יוֹדְעֵ֣י תְרוּעָ֑ה יְ֝הוָ֗ה בְּֽאוֹר־פָּנֶ֥יךָ יְהַלֵּכֽוּן׃

ashre ha'am yod'e teru'a ADONAI beor-panekha yehallekhun

Happy is the people that know the joyful shout; They walk, O LORD, in the light of Thy countenance.

¹⁷בְּ֭שִׁמְךָ יְגִיל֣וּן כָּל־הַיּ֑וֹם וּבְצִדְקָתְךָ֥ יָרֽוּמוּ׃

beshimkha yegilun kal-hayyom uvetzidkatkha yarumu

In Thy name do they rejoice all the day; And through Thy righteousness are they exalted.

¹⁸כִּֽי־תִפְאֶ֣רֶת עֻזָּ֣מוֹ אָ֑תָּה וּ֝בִרְצֹנְךָ֗ תרים [תָּר֥וּם] קַרְנֵֽנוּ׃

ki-tif'eret uzzamo atta uvirtzonkha tarum karnenu

For Thou art the glory of their strength; And in Thy favour our horn is exalted.

¹⁹כִּ֣י לַֽ֭יהוָה מָֽגִנֵּ֑נוּ וְלִקְד֖וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל מַלְכֵּֽנוּ׃

ki laADONAI maginnenu velikdosh yisra'el malkenu

For of the LORD is our shield; And the Holy One of Israel is our king.

²⁰אָ֤ז דִּבַּ֥רְתָּֽ־בְחָ֡זוֹן לַֽחֲסִידֶ֗יךָ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר שִׁוִּ֣יתִי עֵ֭זֶר עַל־גִּבּ֑וֹר הֲרִימ֖וֹתִי בָח֣וּר מֵעָֽם׃

az dibbarta-vechazon lachasidekha vattomer shivviti ezer al-gibbor harimoti vachur me'am

Then Thou spokest in vision to Thy godly ones, And saidst: 'I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

²¹מָ֭צָאתִי דָּוִ֣ד עַבְדִּ֑י בְּשֶׁ֖מֶן קָדְשִׁ֣י מְשַׁחְתִּֽיו׃

matzati david avdi beshemen kadshi meshachtiv

I have found David My servant; With My holy oil have I anointed him;

²²אֲשֶׁ֣ר יָ֭דִי תִּכּ֣וֹן עִמּ֑וֹ אַף־זְרוֹעִ֥י תְאַמְּצֶֽנּוּ׃

asher yadi tikkon immo af-zero'i te'ammetzennu

With whom My hand shall be established; Mine arm also shall strengthen him.

²³לֹֽא־יַשִּׁ֣א אוֹיֵ֣ב בּ֑וֹ וּבֶן־עַ֝וְלָ֗ה לֹ֣א יְעַנֶּֽנּוּ׃

lo-yashi oyev bo uven-avla lo ye'annennu

The enemy shall not exact from him; Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.

²⁴וְכַתּוֹתִ֣י מִפָּנָ֣יו צָרָ֑יו וּמְשַׂנְאָ֥יו אֶגּֽוֹף׃

vekhattoti mippanav tzarav umesan'av eggof

And I will beat to pieces his adversaries before him, And smite them that hate him.

²⁵וֶֽאֶֽמוּנָתִ֣י וְחַסְדִּ֣י עִמּ֑וֹ וּ֝בִשְׁמִ֗י תָּר֥וּם קַרְנֽוֹ׃

ve'emunati vechasdi immo uvishmi tarum karno

But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him; And through My name shall his horn be exalted.

²⁶וְשַׂמְתִּ֣י בַיָּ֣ם יָד֑וֹ וּֽבַנְּהָר֥וֹת יְמִינֽוֹ׃

vesamti vayyam yado uvanneharot yemino

I will set his hand also on the sea, And his right hand on the rivers.

²⁷ה֣וּא יִ֭קְרָאֵנִי אָ֣בִי אָ֑תָּה אֵ֝לִ֗י וְצ֣וּר יְשׁוּעָתִֽי׃

hu yikra'eni avi atta eli vetzur yeshu'ati

He shall call unto Me: Thou art my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation. .

²⁸אַף־אָ֭נִי בְּכ֣וֹר אֶתְּנֵ֑הוּ עֶ֝לְי֗וֹן לְמַלְכֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃

af-ani bekhor ettenehu elyon lemalkhe-aretz

I also will appoint him first-born, The highest of the kings of the earth.

²⁹לְ֭עוֹלָ֗ם אשמור [אֶשְׁמָר]־ל֣וֹ חַסְדִּ֑י וּ֝בְרִיתִ֗י נֶאֱמֶ֥נֶת לֽוֹ׃

le'olam eshmar-lo chasdi uveriti ne'emenet lo

For ever will I keep for him My mercy, And My covenant shall stand fast with him.

³⁰וְשַׂמְתִּ֣י לָעַ֣ד זַרְע֑וֹ וְ֝כִסְא֗וֹ כִּימֵ֥י שָׁמָֽיִם׃

vesamti la'ad zar'o vekhiso kime shamayim

His seed also will I make to endure for ever, And his throne as the days of heaven.

³¹אִם־יַֽעַזְב֣וּ בָ֭נָיו תּוֹרָתִ֑י וּ֝בְמִשְׁפָּטַ֗י לֹ֣א יֵלֵכֽוּן׃

im-ya'azvu vanav torati uvemishpatay lo yelekhun

If his children forsake My law, And walk not in Mine ordinances; :

³²אִם־חֻקֹּתַ֥י יְחַלֵּ֑לוּ וּ֝מִצְוֺתַ֗י לֹ֣א יִשְׁמֹֽרוּ׃

im-chukkotay yechallelu umitzvotay lo yishmoru

If they profane My statutes, And keep not My commandments;

³³וּפָקַדְתִּ֣י בְשֵׁ֣בֶט פִּשְׁעָ֑ם וּבִנְגָעִ֥ים עֲוֺנָֽם׃

ufakadti veshevet pish'am uvinga'im avonam

Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, And their iniquity with strokes.

³⁴וְ֭חַסְדִּי לֹֽא־אָפִ֣יר מֵֽעִמּ֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־אֲ֝שַׁקֵּ֗ר בֶּאֱמוּנָתִֽי׃

vechasdi lo-afir me'immo velo-ashakker be'emunati

But My mercy will I not break off from him, Nor will I be false to My faithfulness.

³⁵לֹא־אֲחַלֵּ֥ל בְּרִיתִ֑י וּמוֹצָ֥א שְׂ֝פָתַ֗י לֹ֣א אֲשַׁנֶּֽה׃

lo-achallel beriti umotza sefatay lo ashanne

My covenant will I not profane, Nor alter that which is gone out of My lips.

³⁶אַ֭חַת נִשְׁבַּ֣עְתִּי בְקָדְשִׁ֑י אִֽם־לְדָוִ֥ד אֲכַזֵּֽב׃

achat nishba'ti vekadshi im-ledavid akhazzev

Once have I sworn by My holiness: Surely I will not be false unto David;

³⁷זַ֭רְעוֹ לְעוֹלָ֣ם יִהְיֶ֑ה וְכִסְא֖וֹ כַשֶּׁ֣מֶשׁ נֶגְדִּֽי׃

zar'o le'olam yihye vekhiso khashemesh negdi

His seed shall endure for ever, And his throne as the sun before Me.

³⁸כְּ֭יָרֵחַ יִכּ֣וֹן עוֹלָ֑ם וְעֵ֥ד בַּ֝שַּׁ֗חַק נֶאֱמָ֥ן סֶֽלָה׃

keyareach yikkon olam ve'ed bashachak ne'eman sela

It shall be established for ever as the moon; And be stedfast as the witness in sky.' Selah

³⁹וְאַתָּ֣ה זָ֭נַחְתָּ וַתִּמְאָ֑ס הִ֝תְעַבַּ֗רְתָּ עִם־מְשִׁיחֶֽךָ׃

ve'atta zanachta vattim'as hit'abbarta im-meshichekha

But Thou hast cast off and rejected, Thou hast been wroth with Thine anointed.

⁴⁰נֵ֭אַרְתָּה בְּרִ֣ית עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ חִלַּ֖לְתָּ לָאָ֣רֶץ נִזְרֽוֹ׃

ne'arta berit avdekha chillalta la'aretz nizro

Thou hast abhorred the covenant of Thy servant; Thou hast profaned his crown even to the ground.

⁴¹פָּרַ֥צְתָּ כָל־גְּדֵרֹתָ֑יו שַׂ֖מְתָּ מִבְצָרָ֣יו מְחִתָּה׃

paratzta khal-gederotav samta mivtzarav mechitta

Thou hast broken down all his fences; Thou hast brought his strongholds to ruin.

⁴²שַׁ֭סֻּהוּ כָּל־עֹ֣בְרֵי דָ֑רֶךְ הָיָ֥ה חֶ֝רְפָּ֗ה לִשְׁכֵנָֽיו׃

shassuhu kal-ovre darekh haya cherpa lishkhenav

All that pass by the way spoil him; He is become a taunt to his neighbours.

⁴³הֲ֭רִימוֹתָ יְמִ֣ין צָרָ֑יו הִ֝שְׂמַ֗חְתָּ כָּל־אוֹיְבָֽיו׃

harimota yemin tzarav hismachta kal-oyvav

Thou hast exalted the right hand of his adversaries; Thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.

⁴⁴אַף־תָּ֭שִׁיב צ֣וּר חַרְבּ֑וֹ וְלֹ֥א הֲ֝קֵימֹת֗וֹ בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

af-tashiv tzur charbo velo hakemoto bammilchama

Yea, Thou turnest back the edge of his sword, And hast not made him to stand in the battle.

⁴⁵הִשְׁבַּ֥תָּ מִטְּהָר֑וֹ וְ֝כִסְא֗וֹ לָאָ֥רֶץ מִגַּֽרְתָּה׃

hishbatta mitteharo vekhiso la'aretz miggarta

Thou hast made his brightness to cease, And cast his throne down to the ground.

⁴⁶הִ֭קְצַרְתָּ יְמֵ֣י עֲלוּמָ֑יו הֶֽעֱטִ֨יתָ עָלָ֖יו בּוּשָׁ֣ה סֶֽלָה׃

hiktzarta yeme alumav he'etita alav busha sela

The days of his youth hast Thou shortened; Thou hast covered him with shame. Selah

⁴⁷עַד־מָ֣ה יְ֭הוָה תִּסָּתֵ֣ר לָנֶ֑צַח תִּבְעַ֖ר כְּמוֹ־אֵ֣שׁ חֲמָתֶֽךָ׃

ad-ma ADONAI tissater lanetzach tiv'ar kemo-esh chamatekha

How long, O LORD, wilt Thou hide Thyself for ever? How long shall Thy wrath burn like fire?

⁴⁸זְכָר־אֲנִ֥י מֶה־חָ֑לֶד עַל־מַה־שָּׁ֝֗וְא בָּרָ֥אתָ כָל־בְּנֵי־אָדָֽם׃

zekhar-ani me-chaled al-ma-shav barata khal-bene-adam

O remember how short my time is; For what vanity hast Thou created all the children of men!

⁴⁹מִ֤י גֶ֣בֶר יִֽ֭חְיֶה וְלֹ֣א יִרְאֶה־מָּ֑וֶת יְמַלֵּ֨ט נַפְשׁ֖וֹ מִיַּד־שְׁא֣וֹל סֶֽלָה׃

mi gever yichye velo yir'e-mavet yemallet nafsho miyyad-sheol sela

What man is he that liveth and shall not see death, That shall deliver his soul from the power of the grave? Selah

⁵⁰אַיֵּ֤ה ׀ חֲסָדֶ֖יךָ הָרִאשֹׁנִ֥ים ׀ אֲדֹנָ֑י נִשְׁבַּ֥עְתָּ לְ֝דָוִ֗ד בֶּאֱמוּנָתֶֽךָ׃

ayye chasadekha harishonim adonay nishba'ta ledavid be'emunatekha

Where are Thy former mercies, O Lord, Which Thou didst swear unto David in Thy faithfulness?

⁵¹זְכֹ֣ר אֲ֭דֹנָי חֶרְפַּ֣ת עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ שְׂאֵתִ֥י בְ֝חֵיקִ֗י כָּל־רַבִּ֥ים עַמִּֽים׃

zekhor adonay cherpat avadekha se'eti vecheki kal-rabbim ammim

Remember, Lord, the taunt of Thy servants; How I do bear in my bosom [the taunt of] so many peoples;

⁵²אֲשֶׁ֤ר חֵרְפ֖וּ אוֹיְבֶ֥יךָ ׀ יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר חֵ֝רְפ֗וּ עִקְּב֥וֹת מְשִׁיחֶֽךָ׃

asher cherfu oyvekha ADONAI asher cherfu ikkevot meshichekha

Wherewith Thine enemies have taunted, O LORD, Wherewith they have taunted the footsteps of Thine anointed.

⁵³בָּר֖וּךְ יְהוָ֥ה לְ֝עוֹלָ֗ם אָ֘מֵ֥ן ׀ וְאָמֵֽן׃

barukh ADONAI le'olam amen ve'amen

Blessed be the LORD for evermore. Amen, and Amen.

¹I will sing of the loving kindness of the LORD forever. With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

²I indeed declare, “Love stands firm forever. You established the heavens. Your faithfulness is in them.”

³“I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David, my servant,

⁴‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build up your throne to all generations.’” Selah.

⁵The heavens will praise your wonders, LORD, your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.

⁶For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the sons of the heavenly beings is like the LORD,

⁷a very awesome God in the council of the holy ones, to be feared above all those who are around him?

⁸LORD, God of Hosts, who is a mighty one, like you? LORD, your faithfulness is around you.

⁹You rule the pride of the sea. When its waves rise up, you calm them.

¹⁰You have broken Rahab in pieces, like one of the slain. You have scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.

¹¹The heavens are yours. The earth also is yours, the world and its fullness. You have founded them.

¹²You have created the north and the south. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name.

¹³You have a mighty arm. Your hand is strong, and your right hand is exalted.

¹⁴Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face.

¹⁵Blessed are the people who learn to acclaim you. They walk in the light of your presence, LORD.

¹⁶In your name they rejoice all day. In your righteousness, they are exalted.

¹⁷For you are the glory of their strength. In your favor, our horn will be exalted.

¹⁸For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁹Then you spoke in vision to your holy ones, and said, “I have given strength to the warrior. I have exalted a young man from the people.

²⁰I have found David, my servant. I have anointed him with my holy oil,

²¹with whom my hand shall be established. My arm will also strengthen him.

²²No enemy will tax him. No wicked man will oppress him.

²³I will beat down his adversaries before him, and strike those who hate him.

²⁴But my faithfulness and my loving kindness will be with him. In my name, his horn will be exalted.

²⁵I will set his hand also on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers.

²⁶He will call to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation!’

²⁷I will also appoint him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

²⁸I will keep my loving kindness for him forever more. My covenant will stand firm with him.

²⁹I will also make his offspring endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

³⁰If his children forsake my Torah, and don’t walk in my ordinances;

³¹if they break my statutes, and don’t keep my commandments;

³²then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

³³But I will not completely take my loving kindness from him, nor allow my faithfulness to fail.

³⁴I will not break my covenant, nor alter what my lips have uttered.

³⁵Once I have sworn by my holiness, I will not lie to David.

³⁶His offspring will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me.

³⁷It will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah.

³⁸But you have rejected and spurned. You have been angry with your anointed.

³⁹You have renounced the covenant of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust.

⁴⁰You have broken down all his hedges. You have brought his strongholds to ruin.

⁴¹All who pass by the way rob him. He has become a reproach to his neighbors.

⁴²You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries. You have made all of his enemies rejoice.

⁴³Yes, you turn back the edge of his sword, and haven’t supported him in battle.

⁴⁴You have ended his splendor, and thrown his throne down to the ground.

⁴⁵You have shortened the days of his youth. You have covered him with shame. Selah.

⁴⁶How long, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire?

⁴⁷Remember how short my time is, for what vanity you have created all the children of men!

⁴⁸What man is he who shall live and not see death, who shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah.

⁴⁹Lord, where are your former loving kindnesses, which you swore to David in your faithfulness?

⁵⁰Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples,

⁵¹With which your enemies have mocked, LORD, with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed one.

⁵²Blessed be the LORD forever more. Amen, and Amen.
