1מַֽעֲנֶה־רַּ֭ךְ יָשִׁ֣יב חֵמָ֑ה וּדְבַר־עֶ֝֗צֶב יַעֲלֶה־אָֽף׃
ma'ane-rakh yashiv chema udevar-etzev ya'ale-af
A soft answer turneth away wrath; But a grievous word stirreth up anger.
2לְשׁ֣וֹן חֲ֭כָמִים תֵּיטִ֣יב דָּ֑עַת וּפִ֥י כְ֝סִילִ֗ים יַבִּ֥יעַ אִוֶּֽלֶת׃
leshon chakhamim tetiv da'at ufi khesilim yabbia ivvelet
The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright; But the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.
3בְּֽכָל־מָ֭קוֹם עֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה צֹ֝פ֗וֹת רָעִ֥ים וטוֹבִֽים׃
bekhal-makom ene ADONAI tzofot ra'im vtovim
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, Keeping watch upon the evil and the good.
4מַרְפֵּ֣א לָ֭שׁוֹן עֵ֣ץ חַיִּ֑ים וְסֶ֥לֶף בָּ֝֗הּ שֶׁ֣בֶר בְּרֽוּחַ׃
marpe lashon etz chayyim veselef bah shever beruach
A soothing tongue is a tree of life; But perverseness therein is a wound to the spirit.
5אֱוִ֗יל יִ֭נְאַץ מוּסַ֣ר אָבִ֑יו וְשֹׁמֵ֖ר תּוֹכַ֣חַת יַעְרִֽם׃
evil yin'atz musar aviv veshomer tokhachat ya'rim
A fool despiseth his father’s correction; But he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
6בֵּ֣ית צַ֭דִּיק חֹ֣סֶן רָ֑ב וּבִתְבוּאַ֖ת רָשָׁ֣ע נֶעְכָּֽרֶת׃
bet tzaddik chosen rav uvitvu'at rasha' ne'karet
In the house of the righteous is much treasure; But in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.
7שִׂפְתֵ֣י חֲ֭כָמִים יְזָ֣רוּ דָ֑עַת וְלֵ֖ב כְּסִילִ֣ים לֹא־כֵֽן׃
sifte chakhamim yezaru da'at velev kesilim lo-khen
The lips of the wise disperse knowledge; But the heart of the foolish is not stedfast.
8זֶ֣בַח רְ֭שָׁעִים תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וּתְפִלַּ֖ת יְשָׁרִ֣ים רְצוֹנֽוֹ׃
zevach resha'im to'avat ADONAI utefillat yesharim retzono
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD; But the prayer of the upright is His delight.
9תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה דֶּ֣רֶךְ רָשָׁ֑ע וּמְרַדֵּ֖ף צְדָקָ֣ה יֶאֱהָֽב׃
to'avat ADONAI derekh rasha' umeraddef tzedaka ye'ehav
The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD; But He loveth him that followeth after righteousness.
10מוּסָ֣ר רָ֭ע לְעֹזֵ֣ב אֹ֑רַח שׂוֹנֵ֖א תוֹכַ֣חַת יָמֽוּת׃
musar ra' le'ozev orach sone tokhachat yamut
There is grievous correction for him that forsaketh the way; And he that hateth reproof shall die.
11שְׁא֣וֹל וַ֭אֲבַדּוֹן נֶ֣גֶד יְהוָ֑ה אַ֝֗ף כִּֽי־לִבּ֥וֹת בְּֽנֵי־אָדָֽם׃
sheol va'avaddon neged ADONAI af ki-libbot bene-adam
The nether-world and Destruction are before the LORD; How much more then the hearts of the children of men!
12לֹ֣א יֶאֱהַב־לֵ֭ץ הוֹכֵ֣חַֽ ל֑וֹ אֶל־חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים לֹ֣א יֵלֵֽךְ׃
lo ye'ehav-letz hokheach lo el-chakhamim lo yelekh
A scorner loveth not to be reproved; He will not go unto the wise.
13לֵ֣ב שָׂ֭מֵחַ יֵיטִ֣ב פָּנִ֑ים וּבְעַצְּבַת־לֵ֝ב ר֣וּחַ נְכֵאָֽה׃
lev sameach yetiv panim uve'atzevat-lev ruach nekhe'a
A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance; But by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.
14לֵ֣ב נָ֭בוֹן יְבַקֶּשׁ־דָּ֑עַת ופני [וּפִ֥י] כְ֝סִילִ֗ים יִרְעֶ֥ה אִוֶּֽלֶת׃
lev navon yevakkesh-da'at ufi khesilim yir'e ivvelet
The heart of him that hath discernment seeketh knowledge; But the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.
15כָּל־יְמֵ֣י עָנִ֣י רָעִ֑ים וְטֽוֹב־לֵ֝֗ב מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה תָמִֽיד׃
kal-yeme ani ra'im vetov-lev mishte tamid
All the days of the poor are evil; But he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
16טוֹב־מְ֭עַט בְּיִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה מֵאוֹצָ֥ר רָ֝֗ב וּמְה֥וּמָה בֽוֹ׃
tov-me'at beyir'at ADONAI meotzar rav umehuma vo
Better is little with the fear of the LORD, Than great treasure and turmoil therewith.
17ט֤וֹב אֲרֻחַ֣ת יָ֭רָק וְאַהֲבָה־שָׁ֑ם מִשּׁ֥וֹר אָ֝ב֗וּס וְשִׂנְאָה־בֽוֹ׃
tov aruchat yarak ve'ahava-sham mishor avus vesin'a-vo
Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, Than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
18אִ֣ישׁ חֵ֭מָה יְגָרֶ֣ה מָד֑וֹן וְאֶ֥רֶך אַ֝פַּ֗יִם יַשְׁקִ֥יט רִֽיב׃
ish chema yegare madon ve'erekh appayim yashkit riv
A wrathful man stirreth up discord; But he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.
19דֶּ֣רֶךְ עָ֭צֵל כִּמְשֻׂ֣כַת חָ֑דֶק וְאֹ֖רַח יְשָׁרִ֣ים סְלֻלָֽה׃
derekh atzel kimsukhat chadek ve'orach yesharim selula
The way of the sluggard is as though hedged by thorns; But the path of the upright is even.
20בֵּ֣ן חָ֭כָם יְשַׂמַּח־אָ֑ב וּכְסִ֥יל אָ֝דָ֗ם בּוֹזֶ֥ה אִמּֽוֹ׃
ben chakham yesammach-av ukhesil adam boze immo
A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish man despiseth his mother.
21אִ֭וֶּלֶת שִׂמְחָ֣ה לַחֲסַר־לֵ֑ב וְאִ֥ישׁ תְּ֝בוּנָ֗ה יְיַשֶׁר־לָֽכֶת׃
ivvelet simcha lachasar-lev ve'ish tevuna yeyasher-lakhet
Folly is joy to him that lacketh understanding; But a man of discernment walketh straightforwards.
22הָפֵ֣ר מַ֭חֲשָׁבוֹת בְּאֵ֣ין ס֑וֹד וּבְרֹ֖ב יוֹעֲצִ֣ים תָּקֽוּם׃
hafer machashavot be'en sod uverov yo'atzim takum
For want of counsel purposes are frustrated; But in the multitude of counsellors they are established.
23שִׂמְחָ֣ה לָ֭אִישׁ בְּמַעֲנֵה־פִ֑יו וְדָבָ֖ר בְּעִתּ֣וֹ מַה־טּֽוֹב׃
simcha la'ish bema'ane-fiv vedavar be'itto ma-tov
A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth; And a word in due season, how good is it!
24אֹ֣רַח חַ֭יִּים לְמַ֣עְלָה לְמַשְׂכִּ֑יל לְמַ֥עַן ס֝֗וּר מִשְּׁא֥וֹל מָֽטָּה׃
orach chayyim lema'la lemaskil lema'an sur misheol matta
The path of life goeth upward for the wise, that he may depart from the nether-world beneath.
25בֵּ֣ית גֵּ֭אִים יִסַּ֥ח ׀ יְהוָ֑ה וְ֝יַצֵּ֗ב גְּב֣וּל אַלְמָנָֽה׃
bet ge'im yissach ADONAI veyatzev gevul almana
The LORD will pluck up the house of the proud; But He will establish the border of the widow.
26תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת רָ֑ע וּ֝טְהֹרִ֗ים אִמְרֵי־נֹֽעַם׃
to'avat ADONAI machshevot ra' utehorim imre-no'am
The thoughts of wickedness are an abomination to the LORD; But words of pleasantness are pure.
27עֹכֵ֣ר בֵּ֭יתוֹ בּוֹצֵ֣עַ בָּ֑צַע וְשׂוֹנֵ֖א מַתָּנֹ֣ת יִחְיֶֽה׃
okher beto botzea batza' vesone mattanot yichye
He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; But he that hateth gifts shall live.
28לֵ֣ב צַ֭דִּיק יֶהְגֶּ֣ה לַעֲנ֑וֹת וּפִ֥י רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים יַבִּ֥יעַ רָעֽוֹת׃
lev tzaddik yehge la'anot ufi resha'im yabbia ra'ot
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer; But the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
29רָח֣וֹק יְ֭הוָה מֵרְשָׁעִ֑ים וּתְפִלַּ֖ת צַדִּיקִ֣ים יִשְׁמָֽע׃
rachok ADONAI mersha'im utefillat tzaddikim yishma'
The LORD is far from the wicked; But He heareth the prayer of the righteous.
30מְֽאוֹר־עֵ֭ינַיִם יְשַׂמַּֽח־לֵ֑ב שְׁמוּעָ֥ה ט֝וֹבָ֗ה תְּדַשֶּׁן־עָֽצֶם׃
meor-enayim yesammach-lev shemu'a tova tedashen-atzem
The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart; And a good report maketh the bones fat.
31אֹ֗זֶן שֹׁ֭מַעַת תּוֹכַ֣חַת חַיִּ֑ים בְּקֶ֖רֶב חֲכָמִ֣ים תָּלִֽין׃
ozen shoma'at tokhachat chayyim bekerev chakhamim talin
The ear that hearkeneth to the reproof of life abideth among the wise.
32פּוֹרֵ֣עַ מ֭וּסָר מוֹאֵ֣ס נַפְשׁ֑וֹ וְשׁוֹמֵ֥עַ תּ֝וֹכַ֗חַת ק֣וֹנֶה לֵּֽב׃
porea musar mo'es nafsho veshomea tokhachat kone lev
He that refuseth correction despiseth his own soul; But he that hearkeneth to reproof getteth understanding.
33יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה מוּסַ֣ר חָכְמָ֑ה וְלִפְנֵ֖י כָב֣וֹד עֲנָוָֽה׃
yir'at ADONAI musar chakhma velifne khavod anava
The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; And before honour goeth humility.
