¹וּבַשָּׁנָ֨ה הַשְּׁבִעִ֜ית הִתְחַזַּ֣ק יְהוֹיָדָ֗ע וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־שָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֡וֹת לַעֲזַרְיָ֣הוּ בֶן־יְרֹחָ֡ם וּלְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל בֶּן־יְ֠הוֹחָנָן וְלַֽעֲזַרְיָ֨הוּ בֶן־עוֹבֵ֜ד וְאֶת־מַעֲשֵׂיָ֧הוּ בֶן־עֲדָיָ֛הוּ וְאֶת־אֱלִישָׁפָ֥ט בֶּן־זִכְרִ֖י עִמּ֥וֹ בַבְּרִֽית׃

uvashana hashevi'it hitchazzak yehoyada' vayyikkach et-sare hammeot la'azaryahu ven-yerocham uleyishma'el ben-yehochanan vela'azaryahu ven-oved ve'et-ma'aseyahu ven-adayahu ve'et-elishafat ben-zikhri immo vabberit

And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with him.

²וַיָּסֹ֨בּוּ֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּקְבְּצ֤וּ אֶת־הַלְוִיִּם֙ מִכָּל־עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וְרָאשֵׁ֥י הָאָב֖וֹת לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אֶל־יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

vayyasobbu bihuda vayyikbetzu et-halviyyim mikkal-are yehuda verashe ha'avot leyisra'el vayyavou el-yerushalam

And they went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the heads of fathers’houses of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.

³וַיִּכְרֹ֨ת כָּל־הַקָּהָ֥ל בְּרִ֛ית בְּבֵ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים עִם־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם הִנֵּ֤ה בֶן־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ יִמְלֹ֔ךְ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה עַל־בְּנֵ֥י דָוִֽיד׃

vayyikhrot kal-hakkahal berit bevet ha'elohim im-hammelekh vayyomer lahem hinne ven-hammelekh yimlokh ka'asher dibber ADONAI al-bene david

And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said unto them: ‘Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the LORD hath spoken concerning the sons of David.

⁴זֶ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֨ית מִכֶּ֜ם בָּאֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֗ת לַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ וְלַלְוִיִּ֔ם לְשֹֽׁעֲרֵ֖י הַסִּפִּֽים׃

ze haddavar asher ta'asu hashelishit mikkem ba'e hashabbat lakkohanim velalviyyim lesho'are hassippim

This is the thing that ye shall do: a third part of you, that come in on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the doors;

⁵וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁית֙ בְּבֵ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁ֖ית בְּשַׁ֣עַר הַיְס֑וֹד וְכָל־הָעָ֔ם בְּחַצְר֖וֹת בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

vehashelishit bevet hammelekh vehashelishit besha'ar haysod vekhal-ha'am bechatzrot bet ADONAI

and a third part shall be at the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation; and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD.

⁶וְאַל־יָב֣וֹא בֵית־יְהוָ֗ה כִּ֤י אִם־הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ וְהַמְשָׁרְתִ֣ים לַלְוִיִּ֔ם הֵ֥מָּה יָבֹ֖אוּ כִּי־קֹ֣דֶשׁ הֵ֑מָּה וְכָל־הָעָ֔ם יִשְׁמְר֖וּ מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת יְהוָֽה׃

ve'al-yavo vet-ADONAI ki im-hakkohanim vehamshartim lalviyyim hemma yavou ki-kodesh hemma vekhal-ha'am yishmeru mishmeret ADONAI

But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall come in, for they are holy; but all the people shall keep the charge of the LORD.

⁷וְהִקִּיפוּ֩ הַלְוִיִּ֨ם אֶת־הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ סָבִ֗יב אִ֚ישׁ וְכֵלָ֣יו בְּיָד֔וֹ וְהַבָּ֥א אֶל־הַבַּ֖יִת יוּמָ֑ת וִֽהְי֥וּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בְּבֹא֥וֹ וּבְצֵאתֽוֹ׃

vehikkifu halviyyim et-hammelekh saviv ish vekhelav beyado vehabba el-habbayit yumat vihyu et-hammelekh bevoo uvetzeto

And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whosoever cometh into the house, let him be slain; and be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out.’

⁸וַיַּעֲשׂ֨וּ הַלְוִיִּ֜ם וְכָל־יְהוּדָ֗ה כְּכֹ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּה֮ יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע הַכֹּהֵן֒ וַיִּקְחוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־אֲנָשָׁ֔יו בָּאֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֔ת עִ֖ם יוֹצְאֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת כִּ֣י לֹ֥א פָטַ֛ר יְהוֹיָדָ֥ע הַכֹּהֵ֖ן אֶת־הַֽמַּחְלְקֽוֹת׃

vayya'asu halviyyim vekhal-yehuda kekhol asher-tzivva yehoyada' hakkohen vayyikchu ish et-anashav ba'e hashabbat im yotz'e hashabbat ki lo fatar yehoyada' hakkohen et-hammachlekot

So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and they took every man his men, those that were to come in on the sabbath, with those that were to go out on the sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses.

⁹וַיִּתֵּן֩ יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע הַכֹּהֵ֜ן לְשָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֗וֹת אֶת־הַֽחֲנִיתִים֙ וְאֶת־הַמָּגִנּוֹת֙ וְאֶת־הַשְּׁלָטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֑יד אֲשֶׁ֖ר בֵּ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

vayyitten yehoyada' hakkohen lesare hammeot et-hachanitim ve'et-hammaginnot ve'et-hashelatim asher lammelekh david asher bet ha'elohim

And Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God.

¹⁰וַיַּעֲמֵ֨ד אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֜ם וְאִ֣ישׁ ׀ שִׁלְח֣וֹ בְיָד֗וֹ מִכֶּ֨תֶף הַבַּ֤יִת הַיְמָנִית֙ עַד־כֶּ֤תֶף הַבַּ֨יִת֙ הַשְּׂמָאלִ֔ית לַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ וְלַבָּ֑יִת עַל־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ סָבִֽיב׃

vayya'amed et-kal-ha'am ve'ish shilcho veyado mikketef habbayit haymanit ad-ketef habbayit hassemalit lammizbeach velabbayit al-hammelekh saviv

And he set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, along by the altar and the house, by the king round about.

¹¹וַיּוֹצִ֣יאוּ אֶת־בֶּן־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ עָלָיו֙ אֶת־הַנֵּ֨זֶר֙ וְאֶת־הָ֣עֵד֔וּת וַיַּמְלִ֖יכוּ אֹת֑וֹ וַיִּמְשָׁחֻ֨הוּ֙ יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע וּבָנָ֔יו וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ יְחִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

vayyotziu et-ben-hammelekh vayyittenu alav et-hannezer ve'et-ha'edut vayyamlikhu oto vayyimshachuhu yehoyada' uvanav vayyomru yechi hammelekh

Then they brought out the king’s son, and put upon him the crown and the insignia, and made him king; and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him; and they said: ‘Long live the king.’

¹²וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע עֲתַלְיָ֗הוּ אֶת־ק֤וֹל הָעָם֙ הָֽרָצִ֔ים וְהַֽמְהַֽלְלִ֖ים אֶת־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַתָּב֥וֹא אֶל־הָעָ֖ם בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

vattishma' atalyahu et-kol ha'am haratzim vehamhallim et-hammelekh vattavo el-ha'am bet ADONAI

And when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of the LORD;

¹³וַתֵּ֡רֶא וְהִנֵּ֣ה הַמֶּלֶךְ֩ עוֹמֵ֨ד עַֽל־עַמּוּד֜וֹ בַּמָּב֗וֹא וְהַשָּׂרִ֣ים וְהַחֲצֹצְרוֹת֮ עַל־הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ וְכָל־עַ֨ם הָאָ֜רֶץ שָׂמֵ֗חַ וְתוֹקֵ֨עַ֙ בַּחֲצֹ֣צְר֔וֹת וְהַמְשֽׁוֹרֲרִים֙ בִּכְלֵ֣י הַשִּׁ֔יר וּמוֹדִיעִ֖ים לְהַלֵּ֑ל וַתִּקְרַ֤ע עֲתַלְיָ֨הוּ֙ אֶת־בְּגָדֶ֔יהָ וַתֹּ֖אמֶר קֶ֥שֶׁר קָֽשֶׁר׃

vattere vehinne hammelekh omed al-ammudo bammavo vehassarim vehachatzotzrot al-hammelekh vekhal-am ha'aretz sameach vetokea bachatzotzrot vehamshorarim bikhle hashir umodi'im lehallel vattikra' atalyahu et-begadeha vattomer kesher kasher

and she looked, and, behold, the king stood on his platform at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpets by the king; and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets; the singers also [played] on instruments of music, and led the singing of praise. Then Athaliah rent her clothes, and said: ‘Treason, treason.’

¹⁴וַיּוֹצֵא֩ יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע הַכֹּהֵ֜ן אֶת־שָׂרֵ֥י הַמֵּא֣וֹת ׀ פְּקוּדֵ֣י הַחַ֗יִל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ הֽוֹצִיא֨וּהָ֙ אֶל־מִבֵּ֣ית הַשְּׂדֵר֔וֹת וְהַבָּ֥א אַחֲרֶ֖יהָ יוּמַ֣ת בֶּחָ֑רֶב כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן לֹ֥א תְמִית֖וּהָ בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

vayyotze yehoyada' hakkohen et-sare hammeot pekude hachayil vayyomer alehem hotziuha el-mibbet hassederot vehabba achareha yumat becharev ki amar hakkohen lo temituha bet ADONAI

And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them: ‘Have her forth between the ranks; and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword’; for the priest said: ‘Slay her not in the house of the LORD.’

¹⁵וַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּ לָהּ֙ יָדַ֔יִם וַתָּב֛וֹא אֶל־מְב֥וֹא שַֽׁעַר־הַסּוּסִ֖ים בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיְמִית֖וּהָ שָֽׁם׃

vayyasimu lah yadayim vattavo el-mevo sha'ar-hassusim bet hammelekh vaymituha sham

So they made way for her; and she went to the entry of the horse gate to the king’s house; and they slew her there.

¹⁶וַיִּכְרֹ֤ת יְהוֹיָדָע֙ בְּרִ֔ית בֵּינ֕וֹ וּבֵ֥ין כָּל־הָעָ֖ם וּבֵ֣ין הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ לִהְי֥וֹת לְעָ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃

vayyikhrot yehoyada' berit beno uven kal-ha'am uven hammelekh lihyot le'am laADONAI

And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, and all the people, and the king, that they should be the LORD’S people.

¹⁷וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ כָל־הָעָ֤ם בֵּית־הַבַּ֨עַל֙ וַֽיִּתְּצֻ֔הוּ וְאֶת־מִזְבְּחֹתָ֥יו וְאֶת־צְלָמָ֖יו שִׁבֵּ֑רוּ וְאֵ֗ת מַתָּן֙ כֹּהֵ֣ן הַבַּ֔עַל הָרְג֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י הַֽמִּזְבְּחֽוֹת׃

vayyavou khal-ha'am bet-habba'al vayyittetzuhu ve'et-mizbechotav ve'et-tzelamav shibberu ve'et mattan kohen habba'al hargu lifne hammizbechot

And all the people went to the house of Baal, and broke it down, and broke his altars and his images in pieces, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.

¹⁸וַיָּשֶׂם֩ יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע פְּקֻדֹּ֜ת בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֗ה בְּיַ֨ד הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים הַלְוִיִּם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָלַ֣ק דָּוִיד֮ עַל־בֵּ֣ית יְהוָה֒ לְֽהַעֲל֞וֹת עֹל֣וֹת יְהוָ֗ה כַּכָּת֛וּב בְּתוֹרַ֥ת מֹשֶׁ֖ה בְּשִׂמְחָ֣ה וּבְשִׁ֑יר עַ֖ל יְדֵ֥י דָוִֽיד׃

vayyasem yehoyada' pekuddot bet ADONAI beyad hakkohanim halviyyim asher chalak david al-bet ADONAI leha'alot olot ADONAI kakkatuv betorat moshe besimcha uveshir al yede david

And Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD under the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt-offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the direction of David.

¹⁹וַֽיַּעֲמֵד֙ הַשּׁ֣וֹעֲרִ֔ים עַֽל־שַׁעֲרֵ֖י בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־יָבֹ֥א טָמֵ֖א לְכָל־דָּבָֽר׃

vayya'amed hasho'arim al-sha'are bet ADONAI velo-yavo tame lekhal-davar

And he set the porters at the gates of the house of the LORD, that none that was unclean in any thing should enter in.

²⁰וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־שָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֡וֹת וְאֶת־הָֽאַדִּירִים֩ וְאֶת־הַמּֽוֹשְׁלִ֨ים בָּעָ֜ם וְאֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־עַ֣ם הָאָ֗רֶץ וַיּ֤וֹרֶד אֶת־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֛אוּ בְּתֽוֹךְ־שַׁ֥עַר הָֽעֶלְי֖וֹן בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיּוֹשִׁ֨יבוּ֙ אֶת־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עַ֖ל כִּסֵּ֥א הַמַּמְלָכָֽה׃

vayyikkach et-sare hammeot ve'et-ha'addirim ve'et-hammoshlim ba'am ve'et kal-am ha'aretz vayyored et-hammelekh mibbet ADONAI vayyavou betokh-sha'ar ha'elyon bet hammelekh vayyoshivu et-hammelekh al kisse hammamlakha

And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD; and they came through the upper gate unto the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom.

²¹וַיִּשְׂמְח֥וּ כָל־עַם־הָאָ֖רֶץ וְהָעִ֣יר שָׁקָ֑טָה וְאֶת־עֲתַלְיָ֖הוּ הֵמִ֥יתוּ בֶחָֽרֶב׃

vayyismechu khal-am-ha'aretz veha'ir shakata ve'et-atalyahu hemitu vecharev

So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; and they slew Athaliah with the sword.

³All the assembly made a covenant with the king in God’s house. Jehoiada said to them, “Behold, the king’s son must reign, as the LORD has spoken concerning the sons of David.

⁴This is the thing that you must do: a third part of you, who come in on the Sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be gatekeepers of the thresholds.

⁵A third part shall be at the king’s house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation. All the people will be in the courts of the LORD’s house.

⁶But let no one come into the LORD’s house except the priests and those who minister of the Levites. They shall come in, for they are holy, but all the people shall follow the LORD’s instructions.

⁷The Levites shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand. Whoever comes into the house, let him be slain. Be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out.”

⁸So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. They each took his men, those who were to come in on the Sabbath, with those who were to go out on the Sabbath, for Jehoiada the priest didn’t dismiss the shift.

⁹Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears, bucklers, and shields that had been king David’s, which were in God’s house.

¹⁰He set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, near the altar and the house, around the king.

¹⁴Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, “Bring her out between the ranks; and whoever follows her, let him be slain with the sword.” For the priest said, “Don’t kill her in the LORD’s house.”

¹⁵So they made way for her. She went to the entrance of the horse gate to the king’s house; and they killed her there.

¹⁶Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, all the people, and the king, that they should be the LORD’s people.

¹⁷All the people went to the house of Baal, broke it down, broke his altars and his images in pieces, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.

¹⁸Jehoiada appointed the officers of the LORD’s house under the hand of the Levitical priests, whom David had distributed in the LORD’s house, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Torah of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as David had ordered.

¹⁹He set the gatekeepers at the gates of the LORD’s house, that no one who was unclean in anything should enter in.

²⁰He took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the LORD’s house. They came through the upper gate to the king’s house, and set the king on the throne of the kingdom.
