Beit HaMikdash
The Temple and the sacrifices
Yeshua taught in the Temple, cleansed it, and said it would fall. Forty years later it did.
The Temple was where God's presence dwelt among Israel and sacrifices were offered for sin. Yeshua was presented there as a baby (Luke 2), taught in its courts, and called it "my Father's house" (John 2:16).
He predicted its destruction (Mark 13:2). In 70 CE Roman legions burned it; the Western Wall is part of the retaining wall of its platform.
Daniel 9 and Malachi 3 said the Messiah would come while the Second Temple stood. After it fell, no sacrifice for sin could be offered. Messianic Jews believe Yeshua's death is the final atonement the sacrifices pointed to.
In the Scriptures
1Behold, I send My messenger, and he shall clear the way before Me; and the Lord, whom ye seek, will suddenly come to His temple, and the messenger of the covenant, Whom ye delight in, Behold, he cometh, Saith the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 3:1 (Hebrew & JPS 1917)
1As he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Rabbi, see what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!” 2Yeshua said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone on another, which will not be thrown down.”
Mark 13:1-2 (WMB)
19Yeshua answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20The Judeans therefore said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple! Will you raise it up in three days?” 21But he spoke of the temple of his body.
John 2:19-21 (WMB)
