Shavuot

Shavuot and the Spirit

Fifty days after Passover, Israel received the Torah. Fifty days after Yeshua's resurrection, his Jewish followers received the Spirit.

Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, comes seven weeks after Passover. Jewish tradition links it to the giving of the Torah at Sinai.

Acts 2 takes place on Shavuot in Jerusalem, with Jews "from every nation under the sky" there for the feast. The Spirit came with wind and fire, as at Sinai, and about three thousand Jews believed.

Jeremiah promised Torah written on the heart, and Ezekiel promised "I will put my Spirit within you" (36:27). Shavuot in Acts brings those two promises together.

In the Scriptures

15And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the day of rest, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the waving; seven weeks shall there be complete; 16even unto the morrow after the seventh week shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall present a new meal-offering unto the LORD.

26A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. 27And I will put My spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep Mine ordinances, and do them.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 (Hebrew & JPS 1917)

1Now when the day of Shavu`ot had come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. 4They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.
