Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah and the shofar

The shofar calls Israel to wake up and return to God. Its ram's horn recalls the ram given in Isaac's place.

Rosh Hashanah is the "day of blowing" (Numbers 29:1). The Torah reading is the binding of Isaac (Genesis 22), and the shofar recalls the ram God provided.

Its call is to teshuvah, returning to God, in the Days of Awe before Yom Kippur.

The New Covenant speaks of a final trumpet when the dead are raised (1 Corinthians 15:52), and of the Messiah as the Lamb God provided (John 1:29).

In the Scriptures

1And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have a holy convocation: ye shall do no manner of servile work; it is a day of blowing the horn unto you.

13And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son.

Genesis 22:13 (Hebrew & JPS 1917)

52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last shofar. For the shofar will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed.

1 Corinthians 15:52 (WMB)
