His life

Jesus the Jew

Born to a Jewish mother, circumcised on the eighth day, raised in Galilee, a teacher in synagogues, crucified as "King of the Jews".

Yeshua was circumcised and presented at the Temple (Luke 2:21-24). He went up to Jerusalem for Passover as a boy (Luke 2:41-42).

He read from the Isaiah scroll in the Nazareth synagogue (Luke 4:16-21), kept the feasts, wore the fringed garment (Matthew 9:20), and taught Torah to crowds by the Sea of Galilee.

His disciples, his mother, the first church in Jerusalem: all Jewish. For years the question in the early church wasn't whether Jews could believe in Yeshua, but whether gentiles could (Acts 15).

In the Scriptures

21When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Yeshua, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 22When the days of their purification according to the Torah of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord

Luke 2:21-22 (WMB)

16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the scroll, and found the place where it was written, 18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed, 19and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” 20He closed the scroll, gave it back to the shammash, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21He began to tell them, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Luke 4:16-21 (WMB)

1Some men came down from Judea and taught the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised after the custom of Moses, you can’t be saved.” 2Therefore when Paul and Barnabas had no small discord and discussion with them, they appointed Paul, Barnabas, and some others of them to go up to Jerusalem to the emissaries and elders about this question.

Acts 15:1-2 (WMB)
